Maine Clean Energy Talent Match

The Maine Clean Energy Talent Match is a new initiative funded through the Maine Department of Energy Resources to help grow Maine’s clean energy and energy efficiency workforce. Maine’s clean energy economy is the fastest growing in New England, with more than 16,000 people now employed in the sector. Maine Clean Energy Talent Match provides opportunities for Maine people to earn while they learn and gain new skills in clean energy and energy efficiency through hands-on internships across the state.

By participating in the program, clean energy employers will have access to pre-qualified candidates to meet their emerging workforce needs, along with cost-share to cover a portion of the intern’s wages. Meanwhile, interns will gain valuable hands-on experience in Maine’s clean energy sector while getting paid for their work.

Beginning in 2026, the Maine Clean Energy Talent Match will support 25 interns and 15 businesses annually. The Maine Clean Energy Talent Match is administered in partnership with Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) and The JPI Group.

Intern FAQs

- - Step 1: Fill out and submit an interest form.
  - Step 2: The Talent Match Team will review the submitted form and contact you to set up a call.
  - Step 3: If there is an open internship that matches your interests and qualifications, the Talent Match Team will set up an interview with the employer.
  - Step 4: Interview with employer(s).
  - Step 5: If selected, complete onboarding and begin the internship

- Internships will cover a wide range of sectors and activities. These will vary depending on what each employer has available. Examples include, but are not limited to:
  - Clean energy generation: Jobs related to the production of energy from renewable sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass. Examples include solar panel installers, wind turbine technicians, hydroelectric power plant operators, carpenters, electricians, and chemical/biological engineers.
  - Energy efficiency: Jobs that help to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency, such as designing and implementing energy-efficient buildings, appliances, and lighting systems. Examples include weatherization technicians, HVAC technicians, energy auditors, energy managers, and building automation specialists.
  - Alternative transportation: Jobs related to the development and implementation of clean transportation, such as electric vehicles, public transit systems, and bike-sharing programs. Examples include electric vehicle mechanics and engineers as well as transportation planners.
  - Clean grid and storage: Jobs related to the development and maintenance of energy storage systems and smart grid technologies. Examples include grid operators, energy storage system technicians, and smart grid analysts.
  - Services: Clean energy service-related positions support the development, implementation, and regulation of clean energy technologies and policies. Examples include consultants, regulatory affairs specialists, and energy policy analysts.

Employers FAQs

- Step 1: Submit an interest form.
- Step 2: Application is reviewed by Talent Match Team (NEEP and the JPI Group, in consultation with DOER).
- Step 3: Talent Match Team sets up initial phone call and reviews eligibility and proposed internship position(s).
- Step 4: Talent Match Team issues approval to participate in the program as well as approval for individual internship positions.
- Step 5: If approved, you may either identify and bring on your own intern(s) or work with Talent Match Team and match intern candidates with the open position(s).

- Internship roles should provide relevant industry experience to participants.
- The host company must be involved with researching, developing, producing, manufacturing, distributing, selling, implementing, installing, or repairing components, goods, or services related to clean energy technologies. This also includes supporting services such as consulting, finance, tax, and legal services.
- The Department of Energy Resources, in its sole discretion, makes the determination as to whether an employer is a clean energy company for the purposes of the program.

Any position that is directly involved with the research, development, production, manufacturing, distribution, sales, implementation, installation, operation, or repair of components, goods, or services related to the following sectors of clean energy is eligible:
- Clean energy generation
- Clean grid and storage
- Energy efficiency, home performance, and clean HVAC
- Clean fuels
- Alternative transportation
Supporting services such as consulting, finance, tax, and legal services related to energy are also eligible.
All roles within qualifying clean energy companies, such as office administration, marketing, finance, etc. are eligible, excluding positions involving advocacy.
Positions will vary and may include, but are not limited to, carpenter, heat pump/HVAC installer, engineering roles, solar installer, electrician, accounting/ administration, research and communications roles, and weatherization technician.

- Provide an engaged mentor for entirety of intern’s employment
- Ensure mentor attends program training
- Provide intern with opportunities to learn
- Provide regular feedback on intern performance
- Encourage intern to attend all training and program related events
- Review and approve timecards
- Reimburse program monthly for 60% of intern wages, plus 60% of intern payroll, HR, and liability insurance costs
- Participate in final interview with candidates
