Grid modernization and storage includes a variety of industries, activities, and technologies related to constructing, operating, and maintaining energy infrastructure. Energy storage can provide backup power, help manage electric loads, and increase the availability of renewable energy — and a smarter grid can distribute that energy efficiently.

Maine is making its grid more resilient, reliable, flexible, secure, and sustainable — and that’s bringing long-term job opportunities to Maine. Grid modernization requires updates to the State’s electrical power transmission, control, and distribution, as well as the development and installation of new types of clean energy and energy storage.

400 by 2030

To meet the demands of the clean energy future, Maine has ambitious but attainable energy storage benchmarks. Bipartisan legislation has established the following goals for storage capacity to be installed within the State:

300 megawatts by the end of 2025

Maine is in an elite group of just nine states with state-wide energy storage targets.

In 2023, Maine achieved the goal of installing of 100,000 new heat pumps two years ahead of schedule, and set a new goal to install another 175,000 by 2027.
