The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $101,404- $126,755
Avangrid is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Distribution Planning Engineer to join our dynamic team in identifying and developing distribution system investments that will modernize the electric grid and support the ongoing clean energy transition. As Lead Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include leading and performing highly technical distribution system studies including modeling, simulations, and analyses to address system needs and support the company’s strategic vision.
Major Roles and Responsibilities
Provide guidance, mentors, and develops other distribution planning engineers on the team.
Solve complex and unique Distribution Planning and Reliability issues, studies to include but not limited to, thermal loading, distribution automation, N-1 analysis, large scale customer load additions and complex DER interconnections; develops scoping documents for complex distribution system improvement projects and proposes solutions for identified distribution issues, including recommendations for new distribution substations and upgrade/replacement of existing distribution substation transformers and equipment.
Develop alternative methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems or to improve processes/services including Non-Wires Alternatives (NWAs).
Apply the established distribution criteria and uses sound utility engineering practices to identify deficiencies in the distribution system.
Recommends Distribution Automation devices to the system and develop designs and recommendations compliant with program objectives.
Assists during storm restoration.
Leads teams/projects or program initiatives across multiple OpCos that solve complex problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions.
Develop thorough understanding and application of Distribution Planning tools used in day-to-day basis such as Cyme, GIS, SAP, Load Data systems, etc.
Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of distribution planning.
Collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional and divisional activities.
Manage divisional and company- wide projects/studies/initiatives, serve as SME on assigned demonstration projects, initiatives, and teams across AVANGRID.
Technical Skills & Requirements
The following skills and associated competency levels are desired of those candidates seeking a position in Distribution Planning. However, offsetting industry and other relevant technical skills will be considered for candidates without previous experience in these Distribution Planning activities (e.g. T&D Engineering, Operations, P&C, etc.).
Technical Skills/Competencies:
Theoretical Engineering knowledge: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytics, Modeling & Calculation (e.g. sym. components, per unit, etc.), Understanding the Business Model
Team Management: Ability to lead and be accountable for internal and external (consulting) staff towards a common goal. Includes the ability to organize, schedule, and lead a team toward the successful completion of commitments.
Communicating/Influencing & Engineering Documentation: Understanding and conveying ideas clearly and convincingly. Includes written, verbal, and presentation development. Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation, review and approve engineering work done by others.
Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment: Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and Requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.)
Software Proficiency: Expert-level capability with distribution system modeling and simulation software (e.g., CYME, SynerGEE, PSSE, ASPEN, etc.).
Power System Studies – Knowledge & Interpretation of Study Assumptions and Results: (e.g. Comprehensive Area Studies, Power Flow, DER, Voltage, Contingency, phase imbalance, Power Factor correction, Short Circuit, reliability, resiliency, Capacity, distribution automation, etc.)
Education & Experience Requirements
BSEE required
7+ years of experience (Industry Related)
PE License Preferred
